Test Planning of the left lakeside of Lucerne

text

Rive gauche, shore of opportunities

The left bank of the lake does not need to be reinvented. Its characteristics should not be rewritten, but preserved and strengthened. As the rive gauche of the city, the shore and the neighbourhood lay behind the railway station and always received less attention than the rive droite. Today, the area is characterised by very different uses, scales and time periods, but nonetheless remains cohesive thanks to strict external boundaries and a solid internal street system. The left bank of the lake is the only place in Lucerne where the waterside is well connected to the neighbourhood beyond. The neighbourhood and the lakeshore must be considered together and can be carefully developed further. Special attention needs to be paid to the design of the links: to the railway station, via Tribschenstrasse, along the shore. Traffic is still historically affected by an oversupply of parking lots; there is great potential for improvement of the public space. The juxtaposition to the industrial harbour use provides unique spots at the waterfront near the technical spur, and with the re-establishment of the historic Inseli and the redesign of the Alpenquai, the railway station will be connected to the lake: welcome to the rive gauche.
