From Traffic Space to Public Square

Through the spatial reorganization of the corner situation at Barerstraße and Nordendstraße, a new open-space potential emerges in a prominent urban location. A continuous, traffic-free triangular square now forms a “playable” gap within the fabric of the city.

A uniform paving surface unites the square and simultaneously opens it up for use and stay. In addition, a high degree of planting sustainably enhances the quality of the place – creating a microclimatic oasis in an otherwise stony environment.

The existing trees are integrated and complemented by new tree pits. Below them, cushion-like planted green islands structure the square and create niche-like areas for relaxation within a green backdrop. A site-appropriate mix of perennials and shrubs provides a lively play of colors throughout the year. A diverse range of seating options – chairs, tables, and loungers – offers the neighborhood new opportunities to linger at any time of day.

The newly created fountain marks the square along the extension of Barerstraße and, as an identity-forming element, establishes the new meeting point.
