Landscape Visions for the City of Ljubljana
Brdo City Park is envisioned as a new landmark of Ljubljana’s green system – a contemporary urban landscape that connects people, nature, and the city. Located at the junction of residential neighborhoods, recreational zones, and natural corridors, the park occupies a strategic position on the city’s western edge. Its role goes beyond offering space for leisure: it is designed as a resilient, multifunctional environment that enhances everyday life, provides ecological benefits, and strengthens the identity of the wider urban area.
The design transforms today’s fragmented landscape of sports fields, gardens, woodland patches, and undefined green surfaces into a coherent whole. Inspired by the concept of Allmende – the idea of collective land held in common use – Brdo Park is planned as an inclusive and adaptable space, shaped by the needs of its diverse users. A system of “open rooms” structures the park: clearly defined areas with distinctive characters, ranging from wetlands and meadows to community gardens, sports fields, forest groves, and quiet retreats. Together they form a mosaic of experiences that invites play, learning, contemplation, and social encounters.
Vegetation plays a central role in this transformation, functioning as both a design tool and an ecological driver. Robust planting strategies with native and climate-adapted species foster biodiversity, create resilient microclimates, and enrich the sensory qualities of the landscape. From wet meadows and rain gardens to biodiverse forest islands, green elements are carefully integrated not only to beautify the park but also to address water retention, climate adaptation, and ecological education.
Equally important is the human dimension. Brdo Park is conceived as a place for everyone – from children and families to athletes, seniors, and those seeking quiet immersion in nature. A thoughtfully designed catalogue of urban furniture and amenities supports a variety of uses, while educational content, participatory management, and community engagement ensure that the park evolves over time as a living landscape. Far from being a one-off project, it is structured as a long-term process, guided by a masterplan and an inclusive governance model.
Ultimately, Brdo City Park aspires to become more than a local green area: it is a prototype of a next-generation urban park, resilient to climate change, rich in ecological and cultural layers, and open to collective use and interpretation. By harmonizing natural systems with social needs, it offers a model for sustainable urban development and a shared space where the city and its citizens can thrive together.
