The future belongs to open space – in times of climate change, we are looking for new imagery for situations that have been familiar for generations. The classically defined project scale is only part of a more extensive patchwork – understanding open space as part of a networked system of natural space, social space, and climate space is integral for future-oriented thinking within the projects, within the profession, and within the discourse with partners in planning.

Building on the basic knowledge of landscape architects, open space is thought of holistically and established as a solid structuring element. Open space generates atmospheres, identities, as well as addresses. It works on all scales, from the urban-landscape structure to the classic landscape architecture project to furniture in space. Structural and, at the same time, multi-layered, it reflects the most diverse needs with its focal points. Open space is an infrastructure that makes urban life possible in the long term.

The work of Studio Vulkan is emblematic of this networked thinking. In multifaceted projects, the studio takes the lead at all scales in giving shape to the imagery in the design and moderating the team’s specific requirements. In a broad, interdisciplinary discourse, the context-oriented design language is thus created to answer the pressing questions of our time with creative and strategic approaches in concrete project implementation.

Founded in 2014, Studio Vulkan was created at Vulkanstrasse in Zurich following the merger between Schweingruber Zulauf Landscape Architects and Robin Winogrond Landscape Architects. With the opening of the Munich office in 2016, the practice expanded beyond the country’s borders.
Today, Studio Vulkan Landscape Architecture team in Zurich and Munich comprises about 50 people from 10 nationalities. Lukas Schweingruber, Dominik Bueckers, Florian Strauss, Urša Habič, and Christoph Abt are responsible for the operational and strategic management of the office.
