For four days, 43 Vulkanos from Zurich and Munich moved through Paris together — walking, cycling, taking the metro, sketching, presenting, discussing and occasionally just stopping to look.
Our route took us from Billancourt and the Petite Ceinture to Jardin du Luxembourg and Notre-Dame, and from La Villette and the former Macdonald warehouses all the way to Saint-Ouen. Along the way, we looked at very different ways of dealing with infrastructure, heritage, ecology, public space and the transformation of the city.
There was one simple rule behind many of our visits: one project, one colleague, one short presentation. Hearing the projects through each other’s perspectives opened up some of the best conversations of the trip — sometimes on site, sometimes while cycling to the next stop, and often later over dinner.
And there was plenty of that too: good food, good weather, long tables, kilometres through the city and four intense days spent together outside our usual office routines.
A study trip for new references and ideas — and just as much, a chance to spend time together as one team.
