1st Place: Communal Living in Berne, Hamburg

Gemeinschaftliches Wohnen Berne explores how the principles of Hamburg’s garden city tradition can be translated into a contemporary residential neighbourhood.

A sequence of communal courtyards forms the spatial framework of the development, creating a gradual transition between private, shared and public space. Trees, gardens and open lawns define the character of the courtyards and provide spaces for everyday use, encounter and recreation. Integrated rainwater management further strengthens the ecological performance and resilience of the landscape.

Developed in close collaboration with emi architektinnen, the project is guided by a shared ambition to conceive landscape and architecture as one coherent whole. We are grateful for the inspiring collaboration and look forward to contributing to the next stages of the project.
