Making space for the future: Our vision for the Allmenden in Bern

Studio Vulkan Landscape Architecture has developed two spatial strategies for the future development of Bern’s common lands: Open Landscape and Landscape Park. Both approaches conceive the Allmend as a continuous urban open space, preserving its characteristic generosity and openness while introducing clearly defined edges and coherent spatial structures.

The proposed Allmendhaus is envisioned as a multifunctional building that consolidates public programmes and integrates parking within a structured architectural framework. In the Landscape Park variant, parking is relocated underground in order to enhance the spatial continuity and overall quality of the open space.

Together, these strategies represent a significant step towards the long-term development of a distinctive and resilient metropolitan open space for the City of Bern. We extend our sincere thanks to Stadtgrün Bern / Stadt Bern for initiating and moderating the highly constructive public events, and we look forward to further refining the proposals in response to the diverse contributions generated through the participatory process.
