Turbinenweg 1 – Deconstruction and Transformation: A New Place Emerges in Uster

On 31 October 2026, the newly designed outdoor spaces at Turbinenweg 1 in Uster were officially opened. Part of the wider Zellweger site, the project marks the western edge of Zellweger Park. Through the transformation of the former administrative and production buildings and the removal of an existing hall, a new place for the neighbourhood is emerging, offering space for gastronomy, creative activities and events.

Following the successful competition entry in 2021, together with Flury Furrer Architekten, Studio Vulkan further developed the open spaces surrounding the former industrial buildings. The design approach focused on retaining existing elements wherever possible, allowing the site’s industrial history to remain visible and legible. The new public square traces the footprint of the former storage hall through a concrete perimeter. Parts of the original basement have been preserved beneath the surface, serving both as a technical chamber for the new water feature and as rooting space for the trees that will form a leafy canopy above the square. Framed by a seating edge, the new fountain creates a meeting place for the neighbourhood, referencing the industrial canal of the former production site.
