City Park Obere Weierwise Wil

The winning design for the Obere Weierwise landscape park in Winterthur draws directly from the site’s natural conditions and historical relationship with water. Emphasizing the area’s hydrogeological dynamics, the concept transforms the landscape into a vibrant, ecologically rich open space where water plays a central structuring and identity-giving role.

A diverse mosaic of riparian forests, wet meadows, open woodlands, and solitary trees is shaped by varied soil conditions and a dynamic water system centered around the Chrebsbach stream. Flood channels, ponds, and wetlands interconnect habitats into a coherent ecological park.

A fine-grained path network links key urban nodes, while programmatic elements are carefully concentrated at selected points, preserving the open meadow character. Nature-interactive features such as play areas, forest paths, and floating platforms invite visitors to engage with the landscape.

The result is a contemporary “urban nature” park that seamlessly integrates into Winterthur’s green space network and fosters immersive, site-specific nature experiences.
